What’s happening?

Sandwell MBC and WMCA are working on proposals to improve A4123 Birchley Island junction and the interface with M5 Junction 2 in Oldbury.

Latest Works

Works for trial holes for junction improvement works start on Sunday 19th July 2026 for 6 weeks until 30 August 2026.


Lane closures will be in place for 10 days in each of the following phases across the four main routes around Birchley Island: 


Phase 1 – There will be a single lane running along the A4123 Wolverhampton Road in the south direction towards Birmingham. The bus stop by the Shell petrol station will be suspended. 


Phase 2 – There will be a single lane running along Churchbridge Road towards Birmingham from Oldbury with a bus stop suspension towards Birchley Island,


Phase 3 - There will be a single lane running along the A4123 Wolverhampton Road South exit towards Asda with a bus stop suspension 


Phase 4 - There will be a single lane running along the A4123 Wolverhampton Road North past the Aldi towards Birchley Lane with the bus stop before the retail park being kept open for passengers


 

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Plan ahead and allow more time for travel. You will still be able to get to where you need to go during the works.
You will be able to get where you are travelling to by bus. Please plan ahead and allow more time for your bus journey.
Signed diversion will be in place. You may also encounter some delays travelling within the vicinity of the junction for the duration of the works.
