What’s happening?

In the Washwood Heath area of Birmingham, long term works to accommodate the arrival of HS2 are ongoing and include the demolition and reconstruction of both Aston Church Road and Saltley Viaduct.

Works to rebuild Aston Church Road are almost complete with Saltley Viaduct works due to start on Sunday 10 May 2026.

A new bridge will also be constructed to carry the high-speed train over the Lawley Middleway dual carriageway.

Aston Church Road

The new Aston Church Road overbridge is now installed and reopened at the end of January 2026.
Further tie-works will take place over the next couple of months and this road will become the main traffic diversion route when Saltley Viaduct closes in Spring 2026.

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. If you travel, you’ll need more time for your journey to take account of changes and diversions.
Think about your options. If you are travelling locally for a short distance, consider walking or cycling to your destination. 
Public Transport. Bus routes will not be altered during this closure but journeys on 14, 94, 95 bus services may take longer so plan your bus journey and allow more time for travel.
Can you change the time you travel?. Avoid peak times where possible especially between 08:00-09:00 and 14:00-16:00 to avoid school hours.
