Protect your bike

Bikes are one of the most efficient ways to get around. To keep yours safe, we’ve partnered with West Midlands Police to help prevent bike theft. Here’s how you can join us in protecting your bike.

Register it

Register your bike on a secure, Police recognised national database.

Record it

Record your bike’s details—make, model, and frame number. The frame number is usually under the bike between the pedals or near the back wheel. Note any unique features and take a photo for reference.

Security mark it

Cycle Security Marking kits can be purchased at BikeRegister. This simple step acts as a visible deterrent and can reduce bike theft by up to 80%.

Double-lock it, secure it and lock the lot

  • Use at least a Gold-standard D-Lock and, if possible, add a security cable through the rear wheel.
  • Lock the frame and both wheels to the bike stand, keeping your bike close to the stand to limit space for thieves.
  • Avoid placing locks on the ground—they’re easier to break when touching the floor.

Remove the removable bits

Take parts that are easy to remove with you, such as bike lights, pannier bags and other accessories.

Safety bolts

Use safety bolts or locking skewers to secure your bike’s wheels and seat post—this helps prevent them from being stolen.

Park secure

Always lock your bike at a recognised secure cycle parking spot - well-lit, covered by CCTV, and in view of passers-by.
Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas, especially where there are signs of theft like broken locks.

Remember that safety begins at home

Many bikes are stolen from home, so secure yours just as you would on the street. Use strong locks and security products like ground anchors. And remember - don’t share photos of your bike or its location online.
