HS2 and local connectivity

HS2 is the high-speed railway linking London, the Midlands, the North and Scotland.
It’s under construction and will open in 2029.

There will be 2 stations in the West Midlands:

• Birmingham Interchange, near the airport
• Birmingham Curzon Street, in Birmingham city centre

There will also be a train maintenance depot in Washwood Heath.

HS2 is a big opportunity for the whole region. WMCA’s HS2 Growth Strategy explains how we’ll make the most of it.

We’ll invest in public transport and roads to reduce journey times and improve capacity.

We want to make sure everyone in the region can get to a HS2 station easily. We’re working on different projects to help do this. At the moment, we’re running these projects:

• Dudley and Brierley Hill tram extension
• Birmingham Eastside tram extension
• Coventry station upgrade
• Sprint - faster bus routes

We’re also helping with these projects:

• HS2 Interchange Station car park
• East Birmingham and Solihull tram extension
• a new bridge over the M42 for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport
• an automated people mover between Birmingham Interchange station, the NEC and Birmingham Airport
• road junction upgrades near HS2
• Birmingham Moor Street station upgrade
• a new junction to helps trains change from the Coventry to Birmingham line to the Camp Hill line
