What’s happening?

In the Washwood Heath area of Birmingham, works to accommodate the arrival of HS2 will be ongoing over the next decade and shortly gather momentum. These works include the demolition and reconstruction of both Aston Church Road overbridge and Saltley Viaduct.

The Saltley Viaduct works will begin upon completion of the Aston Church Road works. A new bridge will be constructed to carry the high speed train over the Lawley Middleway dual carriageway.

The first area of works will be begin in the area with the creation of a brand new bridge to carry the high speed train across the dual carriageway.

A47 Heartlands Parkway, Birmingham

10 day Full closure of A47 between Heartlands Roundabout and Saltley Viaduct.

Reconstruction works for the new HS2 railway in the Washwood Heath area will continue from Sunday 1 February until Saturday 14 February. 

  • The A47 Heartlands Parkway from Aston Church Road roundabout to Saltley Viaduct roundabout will have a full closure in both directions.
  • A fully signed diversion will be in place:

Travelling to Birmingham City Centre:

Road users will be diverted onto Aston Church Road, Nechells Park Road and the A47 via Goodrick Way.

Travelling from Birmingham City Centre:

Road users will be diverted onto Thimble Mill Lane via Goodrick Way, Long Acre and the A47 via Cuckoo Road.

Please allow more time for your journey during these works.

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Road users are advised to consider travelling. via public transport where possible, continue to allow extra time for your journey or use alternative routes.
Consider retiming your journey by leaving work slightly earlier or later in the day, if possible. .
