What’s happening?

In the Washwood Heath area of Birmingham, works to accommodate the arrival of HS2 will be ongoing over the next decade and shortly gather momentum. These works include the demolition and reconstruction of both Aston Church Road overbridge and Saltley Viaduct.

The Saltley Viaduct works will begin upon completion of the Aston Church Road works. A new bridge will be constructed to carry the high speed train over the Lawley Middleway dual carriageway.

The first area of works will be begin in the area with the creation of a brand new bridge to carry the high speed train across the dual carriageway.

Aston Church Road

Reconstruction and demolition works on the Aston Church Overbridge will start from Saturday 5 October 2024 lasting approximately 14 months. 

  • Aston Church Road will be closed in both directions to motorised traffic.
  • Access for pedestrians and cyclists will remain in place for the duration of the works.
  • A fully signed diversion will be in place:

From Star City Approach:

  1. Continue on A47 past Aston Church Road to the next roundabout at Saltley.
  2. At Roundabout take the first exit to pass over Saltley Viaduct on to Saltley High Street to the next roundabout.
  3. At Roundabout take the first exit on to Washwood Heath Road and continue to the first set of traffic lights.
  4. Diversion ends, Aston Church Road on the left at traffic lights.

 

From Washwood Heath Approach: 

  1. At the junction with Aston Church Road continue over the traffic lights.
  2. Continue on Washwood Heath Road to the roundabout.
  3. At the roundabout take the 3rd Exit onto Saltley High Street and continue over Saltley Viaduct.
  4. At the roundabout on the A47 take the 3rd exit on to A47 Heartlands and continue to next roundabout.
  5. Diversion end, Aston Church Road on the left the 3rd exit.

Bus users:

Bus routes will not be affected during this closure, but your bus journey make take longer on certain services.

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. If you travel, you’ll need more time for your journey to take account of changes and diversions.
Think about your options. and if you are travelling locally for a short distance, consider walking or cycling to your destination. 
Public Transport. Bus routes will not be altered during this closure but journeys on 14, 94, 95 bus services may take longer so plan your bus journey and allow more time for travel.
Can you change the time you travel?. Avoid peak times where possible especially between 08:00-09:00 and 14:00-16:00 to avoid school hours.
